Thursday, March 26, 2009 - Crusade in Haiti
Following some very good revival campaigns and Family Matters Conferences in January, February, and March, the Dave Young Evangelistic Association embarked on a new mission in the land of Haiti. Eight million souls live in this small country, the poorest in the western hemisphere. Through our partnership with The Carpenter's Project, we set out to spend 8 days speaking in several local churches; conducting a Pastor's and Christian Worker's Conference; teaching in a Bible Institute; and conducting an open air evangelistic and church planting crusade in the village of Deklen.
The Haitian people treated us very, very kindly. We felt right at home with Missionary-Evangelist Rodney Fitzsimmons and his dear wife. After over 25 years of ministry, they have planted 14 churches and started a Bible Institute. The first church they planted now runs over 800 each week. The other 13 are growing and are seeing many saved throughout the Gonaive area. Their Bible Institute averages 500 students each week, many of who will graduate and go on to start churches in their respective villages. It was one of these Bible Institute graduates who had the burden to start the church in his home town of Deklen. Deklen has about 1000 residences and although a few churches are in the town, there were none that presented the gospel of Jesus Christ by grace through faith!
Our team was able to secure a piece of property in a prominent area of the village. We set up a generator to power the lights, the keyboard, and the PA system. Since we were the only lights in town (except for one or two light bulbs here and there), we were quite a noticeable attraction! We held a three day crusade, beginning each evening with a program for the youth of the town. It was very well attended and grew throughout each of the three evenings. Kerry Copeland (from our home church in Newark, Ohio) and Pastor James Overton (youth pastor of our home church in Ohio) took care of the Children's Crusade. I was privileged to give the gospel each evening! We had between 375 and 400 attend each service and 54 souls responded to the invitations and were lead to Christ by our personal workers. It was amazing to see the Lord working in those services.
The new church will be meeting on the property where we had the crusade and actually held their first service the Sunday following our crusade. Since no shelter had been erected, they met in the open air, and it rained the entire service. Still 26 souls stayed for the entire service to hear the preaching of God's Word. Please pray for that young church. They have been able to purchase the land, and as soon as the details are completed will build a shelter under which they can meet until they are able to have their own building. The pastor is very excited to see a Gospel preaching church planted in his home town.
Many of you had a part in this evangelistic and church planting trip. Your gifts enabled us to pay for the trip and to take care of all the expenses on the home front while we were gone. God supplied every need through the giving of people just like you. I can assure you, the people of Haiti are indebted to you for your kindness and generosity. Keep on praying for that dark land that many souls will be saved!
Sincerely,
The David Young Revival Team
