Monday, May 11, 2009 - What about Heritage Christian School in Findlay, Ohio
By now, most people have heard about the teenager in Findlay, Ohio who was suspended from Heritage Christian School for attending his girlfriend's public high school prom. Heritage Christian suspended him, his parents ran to the news media, and now the whole world is rushing to pass judgment on this poor mistreated teenager and this horrible over bearing school. Who is at fault? What should be done? Is there an answer?
Who is at fault? Believe it or not this is a rather easy question to answer. Tyler Frost, as a student at Heritage Christian School had to sign an agreement that he would abide by the school's rules and policies. His signature was the reason he was permitted to attend the school. He cannot, legally, have it both ways. His signature of agreement indicated that he had read the rules and policies and that he was willing to agree with those rules and policies. After all, life does work that way - in cell phone agreements, loan processes, and dozens of other agreements. Tyler could have resigned and suffered any consequences for doing so. But legally, he cannot have it both ways. He cannot, scripturally, have it both ways either. If he is a believer, as he claims to be, he is bound by scripture to obey those who have authority over him. After all, all power (authority) is of God and rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft. Tyler is guilty of rebellion by his own admission. So who is at fault here? This teenager who chose to ignore the agreement he personally signed and also HIS PARENTS who also signed the agreement.
What should be done? In the first place, Heritage Christian School should continue to stand for their beliefs. They have every right to make rules and policies that further the position they believe they should take. If Christianity simply bows to every whim of every student, eventually anything will go and Heritage Christian will no longer be what it was or should be. In the second place, Tyler's parents should use this to teach their son the importance of his word, his character, and his integrity. A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches! He had an agreement and should learn to keep his word! In the last place, Tyler should repent, apologize to Heritage Christian School, and take the consequences like a man!
Is there an answer to all of the debate that is raging over Tyler Frost and Heritage Christian School in Findlay, Ohio? There certainly is. America needs a new generation of Christians who will stand for truth, believe the Bible, practise old-fashioned holiness again, and stand on principles of character and integrity. Our homes need parents who will stand for righteousness and holiness. Our children need to see parents who believe in something more than "every man doing that which is right in his own eyes." And oh, how we need a generation of teen agers who will stand for character and integrity as well. May God give us a great reviving in these days!
Sincerely,
The David Young Revival Team
