Monday, August 17, 2009 - Transforming our Lives
Romans 12:1-2 have been verses that many, many believers have memorized and applied to their lives. I know that I have. Shortly after I came to Christ at the age of 15, someone gave me a brochure based on these verses. I read the brochure and hungrily devoured the truths contained in its pages. I well remember kneeling in my bedroom and asking God to help me to live the truths of these two verses. I wanted Him to have my body - a living sacrifice that was both holy and pleasing to Him. I asked Him to help me not to conform my life to the world system in which we live, but to help me to continually be changed into the image of Jesus Christ as I spent time in His word in my own devotions, as I heard His word as it was preached, and as I learned to walk with him on a continual and daily basis! It has been almost 25 years since I prayed over these verses!
Lately, the part about being "transformed by the renewing of your mind" has been speaking to me. I have noticed in my own life and in the life of so many people whom I know, that a change is certainly needed. Worldliness seems to be creeping into our lives with ever increasing rapidity. Our love for souls and for soulwinning is continually waning. Our burden and desire for prayer is too! Have you noticed this in your own life? Perhaps you too need some changes, some transformations in your walk with Christ! Consider these thoughts.
First of all, a transformation is a metamorphasis! In other words it is a radical change. When we have allowed Hollywood entertainment to rule in our lives, our habits, and our homes, it takes a radical change to correct it. Years ago, my own parents became convicted about the influence of the TV in our lives, and as a result, completely removed the television from our homes. They decided that we could do without that influence. We were radical in that we did not have a tv and did not go to the movies. It certainly changed our lives. My parents also decided that although it seemed that no one had dress standards any longer, we were going to have them. Immodesty, sloppiness, and worldliness had to go! As a result, we were rather radical! The ladies in our family did not wear slacks, low cut blouses, and short skirts. The men did not wear shorts either! Man were we radical!
Have you noticed that our generation today is continually conforming to the world rather than to Christ? It is true in our embracing of Hollywood entertainment; our choices of dress; our choices of music; and in many other ways too. I can't help but think that if ever we needed to consider the truth of Romans 12:2 perhaps it is in this generation. And not just in standards either! Perhaps we need to re-evaluate our lack of soulwinning zeal too! Do we need any transformation there? In our prayer lives? Any other area?
Finally, consider that a transformation is always for the better! A metamorphasis results in a beautiful butterfly. When we make changes in our lives and allow the Holy Spirit through the Word of God to transform us into the image of Jesus Christ, it will always be a change for the better. Our marriages will be sweeter. Our homes will be Godlier. Our children will be more spiritual. Our churches will be holier. Souls will be saved. Prayers will be answered. Most importantly, God will be honored and glorified. Isn't that what you want? Me too!
Sincerely,
The David Young Revival Team
