Tuesday, February 26, 2008 - Does God Order the Bad Steps Too?

Psalm 37:23 The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord. The Psalmist makes this point almost as if it is an afterthought. Does it include all the steps of a good man? Does it include those steps that are good and blessed and happy and desirable? Does it also include those that are "bad" and unhappy and undesirable? Some steps are a result of the choices we make. Others are forced upon us by the ordinary circumstances of life. The question is this: Are the steps of a good man really ordered by the Lord? I suppose that anyone can think so when life's steps are a blessing. But what about those that are a burden? Does He order those too? Most certainly He does! And therein lies a great asset in one's spiritual journey. Knowing that God orders every step I take comforts my heart, changes my focus, and compels my trust.

This truth certainly comforts my heart. I may not understand the "whys" and the "whats" of a particular situation. I may feel that nothing is going right and perhaps never will again. The old adage says, "Cheer up, things could be worse" In response one comedian said, "So, I cheered up, and sure enough, things got worse." Have you been there? Are you there now? Know this: He is ordering your steps. Allow that simply truth to comfort your heart.

This truth also changes my focus. It is often so easy to become discouraged in the middle of my situation. There is a sandess in my circumstances. A weight rests upon my thinking. My shoulders are stooped. The tempation to quit grows stronger and strong. But then I remember. He orders my steps. I take my focus off of myself and my problems and I focus on Him.

Do you believe the steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord? Believing compels my trust. I know He is good. As I love Him and serve Him and grow in Him, He directs my steps. Some include battles and burdens and some includes blessings and benefits. In either one I can trust Him. He is in charge of the steps. He has a plan. He has one's best interest in mind. Trust Him! You'll be glad you did. And perhaps that is the full explanation of Romans 8:28. Go ahead and read it again and remember that He is ordering your steps.

Thanks for reading.

Sincerely,

The David Young Revival Team
